The double happiness symbol is formed by merging of two characters of ‘xi’ (喜), that becomes ‘shuangxi’ (囍) which bring the meaning of double happiness. This symbol became well known during the Qing Dynasty in China because it used to be in the emperor’s wedding area and on the royal robes worn by the emperor and empress. Thus, it is linked to royalty and nobility, and quickly became a popular Chinese Wedding Symbols in Chinese culture.

What is the meaning of double happiness symbol?

Double happiness character brings the meaning of love, harmony, loyalty, good luck, and fortune for both the bride and groom. Hence, this character can be found everywhere in a wedding such as on the red bridal gown, wedding cakes, wedding invitations, and red packets.

Red Colour Symbol

Elements are always included in any Chinese Wedding Symbols events including weddings. This is because red colour stands for joy, fertility, luck, success, and good fortune in Chinese tradition. For instance, the bride wore a red dress and covered her face with a red veil. In addition, the accessories and the decoration would include red elements as well.

Animal Symbol

Chinese believe that the dragon signifies wealth and strength for the groom whereas the phoenix signifies grace and renewal of life for the bride. On the other hand, in terms of Feng Shui, the dragon is “yang” while the phoenix is “yin”, they complement each other in creating yin-yang balance to yield a successful and happy marriage. Therefore, Chinese Wedding Symbols the dragon and phoenix are the symbol of everlasting love and they being together is the ultimate symbol of marital happiness.

Flower Symbol

Also flower are always needed in Chinese weddings as the bouquet and decoration. Different types of flowers represent different meanings and there are some popular flowers that are normally used in Chinese Wedding Symbols culture which are lily, orchid, peony, and lotus.

Fruits Symbol

Jujube, peanut, longan, and lotus seed has been combined together. The lucky fruit combination that will give a wish of luck to the newlyweds for their wedding.

What is the meaning of these fruits?

  1. Jujube – something that is coming or happening soon. Because the word for jujube in Chinese sounds similar to the word “early”.
  2. Peanut – peanut in Chinese is pronounce as ‘shēng’ (生) which means born or give birth to.
  3. Longan – good luck in weddings because longan normally have many sons.
  4. Lotus seed – the Chinese sounds of the lotus seed is ‘liánzǐ’ (莲子). With the second character ‘zǐ’ means sons, which symbolise having many children. 

Basically, this combination of fruits is due to their Chinese Wedding Symbols pronunciation because when they are said together. It means that ‘have a baby soon’. These fruits will be spread over the newlyweds’ bed before the wedding day by a “lucky” woman. Someone who has healthy children, usually the mother-in-law, in order to wish the new couple good luck in their marriage.
