As to have good wishes, the newlyweds must prepare the red packets (Ang Pao) on their wedding day to be given to others. The types of Ang Pao are few but the number of Ang Pao must be large. Keep in mind that the amount of red packets varies from person to person and there is no fixed standard, just based on your abilities. Ang Pao for Open Door (开门红包)
When the groom goes to the bride’s house or when the bride goes to the groom’s house, the relatives will help to open the door. The red packet should be given to them as an appreciation. Because it is the first red packet you go to your partner’s house, usually the amount should not be too small.
Amount: Minimum RM50
Quantity: 1
Door Game Session (闯关红包)
The door game session is the challenges that the groom and the groomsmen need to complete when they arrive to pick up the bride. This Ang Pao will only be prepared by the groom and given to the bridesmaid to please them to open the door in order to pick up the bride after completing one challenge. Normally, the bridesmaid would not easily let the groom pick up the bride because there are several challenges. Moreover, once you complete the door game, there are still some challenges outside of the brides’ room. Therefore, the groom should prepare a lot of Ang Pao for this session.
Amount: It can be different amount for different challenges, minimum RM2
Quantity: Minimum 50
Red packet for your junior (晚辈红包)
During the tea ceremony, after you serve tea to your elder, you and your partner will be seated, and the junior will serve tea to both of you. After drinking the tea, you need to give the Ang Pao to your junior which includes your brothers, sisters, and cousins.
Amount: Depends on your relationship, the more closer of the relationship, the higher the amount, RM5/10/20/50/100
Quantity: Based on the number of your family and relatives but it must be more to prevent not enough.
Bride Chaperone (大妗姐/大妗哥)
The newlyweds should give a Ang Pao to the bride chaperone as an appreciation for helping them to handle the wedding ceremony. Normally, this red packet will be prepared by the groom.
Amount: Minimum RM100
Quantity: 1
Bridesmaid and Groomsmen
The groom will prepare the Ang Pao for his groomsmen while the bride prepares for her bridesmaid. Some think that this red packet is for them to cover their expenses for attending the wedding such as the fuel fee. Most importantly, the red packet also is an appreciation for them to be the bridesmaid and groomsmen.
Amount: Minimum RM50
Quantity: Based on the number of your bridesmaid and groomsmen
Backup
Just in case the Ang Pao that you prepared for someone is not enough, the backup packet would come in handy.
Amount: There must be different amounts, RM5/10/20/50.
